Lawn Mowers
As gardening has become more and more popular over the last decade or two, there has been a large increase in the range of garden equipment available. This is no more apparent than in the range of lawn mowers which are now available. It is well worth carrying out a bit of research to find the correct mower for your purpose. There are various options available and you should consider these before making a purchase.
Lawn Mower Buying Guide
How big your lawn is will probably play the biggest part on your decision. If you have a large lawn, you will need to find a mower that is capable of managing a large area. If it is particularly big, you may want to consider a Ride on Mower. Your choice of lawn mower should have sufficient power for the job and you will also have to consider what power sources are available. If you are considering buying an electric mower, but you have a large garden, you will need to check how long the cable is on your intended purchase and whether there is a viable option to use an extension lead. Invariably a larger lawn will require a more powerful model, whether electric or petrol power and this will mean extra cost. You will also need to take into account how large the grass collection box should be. A small box will mean that you will have more interruption whilst you are emptying the contents. There are various options available when it comes to the type of finish you require for your lawn. Each of the extra features is likely to add to the cost of your lawnmower, therefore you should have a good idea what your budget is before you start to look.
There are three basic types of lawn mower. If you have an even lawn and you require a close cut, well manicured lawn, then you should consider a cylinder mower.
Cylinder Mowers
Cylinder mowers have blades which rotate vertically and provide a fine cut finish. They can be either electric or petrol powered, or you can buy the traditional hand pushed model.
Rotary Mowers
Larger lawns are often better with a rotary mower. Although they produce a less fine finish, they are able to cope with more difficult patches of grass, weed and moss. Even sloping banks can be cut well with a rotary mower. The rotary mower works by using horizontally rotating blades. They come in a range of options which include adjustable height settings. Some mowers have as many as seven or eight height settings to allow you to decide the correct finish for your lawn. Many rotary mowers have a removable grass clippings box and some have a roller which allows you to produce a striped finish for your lawn. Although traditionally these lawn mowers have needed to be pushed, some of the latest models are self propelled. These are particularly useful if you have difficulty pushing the standard lawn mower, but they can also get on with the work while you carry out other garden tasks. Some of the larger stately homes employ a team of the self propelled models to ensure larger lawns are kept constantly tidy.
Hover Mowers
Hover mowers are quick and easy to use. They are useful for those people who are unable to push heavier lawn mowers. Rotating blades allow the hover mower to float over even difficult, uneven surfaces and they are ideal for small or medium sized gardens. They are usually very lightweight, which can be useful if you have limited storage space, as some of them are light enough to enable them to be hung on a strong wall hook. Hover mowers tend to also be relatively inexpensive, which makes them useful for those people on a limited budget. However, they tend not to produce as good a finish as other types of lawn mower. They can reach into inaccessible areas as they are easy to control, so even those difficult flowerbeds should be easier to maintain. All hover mowers are electrical, so there is the issue of just how large a lawn your mower will be able to cut easily, due to the limitations of the electric cable. However, some hover mowers can be good for large lawns and some of them have rear wheels, which makes it easier to control the mower and keep it producing a regular finish. Some of the latest models have grass compacting boxes, which allow you to collect more of your grass clippings and therefore require less frequent emptying.

Lawn Mower Buying Considerations
You should consider that the wider the lawn mower, the quicker the job will be done. However balanced against this is the fact that the lawn mower may be less manoeuvrable and is likely to be more expensive. Also, the larger the grass clippings box, the less often you will have to stop and empty it. Some newer models have a Perspex window, which allows you to see when the box is ready for emptying. Although electric powered lawn mowers tend to be more popular, some consideration should be given to the benefits of petrol lawn mowers. They do tend to be more powerful, allowing mowing to be done more quickly. In addition, they can be used anywhere as long as you have a constant supply of petrol to top them up regularly. They generally produce better results. However, they are more expensive to buy and require more upkeep. It is worth bearing in mind also that the fuel for your petrol lawn mower will have to be stored safely. Although petrol models can be more bulky, there are smaller models available which also have key ignition starting which makes it easier for the elderly or infirm. They are also available in self propelled options, which can be altered to suit the walking speed of the individual. One other advantage is that they can be used in wet weather, which is not always the case for electric models. However, from the safety aspect; mowers should not be transported if they are full of petrol.
Electric lawn mowers are light and easy to use and great for smaller and medium sized gardens. You should look for a model with a built in cable and plug tidy system and if possible, it is better to have a safety shut off switch.
